Display a RSS feed on a web kiosk

RSS

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a lightweight XML format designed for sharing web content.

With the new version of Play The Web, you can display pages referred by a RSS feed in the page loop of the screensaver.

With such a source, you get a news screensaver that always displays up-to-date information.

Configure a RSS feed in Play The Web

In Play The Web, open the Configuration dialog and switch to the Pages tab.
Open the Properties dialog box and type the address of a RSS feed source. This can be any address of a .rss feed located on a web server or a file server.
Depending on the news source, a RSS feed can either be a .rss, .rdf or .xml file.
For instance:

http://rss.news.yahoo.com/rss/topstories

Select also the "List of pages in a RSS feed" value in the Type listbox.

Set a display time for each page retrieved from the RSS feed.

Click OK to close the Properties dialog box, and OK again to close the Configuration dialog box.

When Play The Web will be launched, the RSS feed will be retrieved and displayed.

Every time the RSS feed is updated on the server, the software automatically retrieves the newer version and always displays up-to-date information.

However, there is a default minimum update delay of two hours for each RSS feed to avoid sending too many queries to a news source. This update delay can be updated in the Properties dialog box.

Try it!

Enter the address of a RSS feed (.rss, .rdf or .xml file) located on the web or on a file server:

Try  Yahoo! news top stories
(http://rss.news.yahoo.com/rss/topstories)
Wired News RSS feed
(http://www.wired.com/news_drop/netcenter/netcenter.rdf)
ZDNet RSS news feed
(http://www.moreover.com/cgi-local/page?feed=129&o=rss)
